Opus Conservation, in collaboration with Rava Conservation, undertook the conservation of medieval wall painting fragments from the Faras Cathedral collection at the Sudan National Museum in Khartoum. Working alongside the museum’s conservation team and under the auspices of UNESCO and the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM), the project focused on stabilising, cleaning, and conserving a selection of detached mural fragments of significant historical importance.
The work included condition assessment, consolidation, structural support improvements, cleaning and sensitive reintegration. The project also provided training and capacity building for Sudanese conservators, ensuring that knowledge and conservation materials remained in-country to support the long-term care of the collection.
Nine major fragments were successfully conserved, contributing to the preservation and improved presentation of one of the most important collections of medieval Nubian wall paintings.
